In this assignment, I would like to make a photomontage that is surrealistic. After seeing examples of artist who have done photomontage, I am inspired by Hannah Maynard.
She first stepped foot in Victoria in 1862. When she was 28 years old, she started making then-cutting edge art of photography . Only a black box camera and dark room is all she needed. Some of her artwork is used of surrealism.
For instance,
In this image, she casts as the two tea drinkers. They are not twins but they are both casts by Maynard. They looks so natural in this image. Another her stuck on wall art and she is pouring tea towards a tea drinker.
A triangular composition is used in this photo. The one who stuck on wall art is emphasised as she is centre of this image. Moreover, there is more light on the middle. It creates a mystery atmosphere.
I am impressed by Maynard flawless printing techniques. They look so realistic in this image. I like the way that she used to show surrealism . It is an intelligent tricks to combine wall art and lively human in order to create surrealism.
In this photo, it shows two Hannah Maynard standing amongst portraits of her lost children. The child who is sitting down and the statue is her grand children. The sitting child stared at the statue and looks curious about it.They all looking to each other and shows connections between them.
Maynard combined spiritualism and surrealism in this image. As a grieving parent, Maynard created a photo that she can communicate with her lost children . It is a touching scene .
For my own perspective, her grandchild love is deprived from her as she feels sorrow about her lost children. She cannot focus on giving love to her grandchild. As a result, her grandchild wondered himself as a decapitated statuary with no spirit. In addition, Maynard at the left is staring at the portraits of her lost children. However, although Maynard at the right standing near to her grandchild, she is even not looking at him. It indicates that she is only care about her lost children rather than her grand child.
I think Maynard feels guilty about her grandchild therefore she created this image. She also explained why it is hard to maintain balance of her love between her grandchild and her lost children
From my own observation, She always put herself in her photos in order to express herself. She is also a spiritual artist who is willing to bring in deep messages to us. We need some times to figure out the deep meaning . It is like a magic that by using montage of photos, all the messages are included in only a photo. I will learn from her and willing to make a meaningful photomontage.
